The first served during the 2nd World War.
However, this plaque is associated with the 2nd HMAS HOBART.
HMAS HOBART was a Guided Missile Destroyer, commissioned in 1964 by the Royal Australian Navy. It was named after the Capital City of Tasmania and was nicknamed “The Green Ghost.”
After initial sea trials in the USA, it arrived in Australia in 1965.
The ship then served in the Vietnam War, coming under enemy fire on several occasions and also sustained casualties.
The ship has a long link with Fremantle, having visited many times and arrived in Fremantle in 1972 after service in Vietnam. The ship visited Fremantle numerous times during the 1970’s, 80’s & 90’s.
The ship served during the peace time operations of the Royal Australian Navy and also during the Persian Gulf operations. The ship was decommissioned in May 2000.
After her decommissioning the HMAS HOBART was gifted by the Royal Australian Navy to South Australia and was used as a dive wreck, being sunk off Yankalilla BayRelevance to the CityHMAS HOBART served in the Royal Australian Navy in the defence of Australian waters and has been based around Fremantle for some of her service. Many of her crew were from Western Australia.
