The plaque was gifted to the Mayor and City upon a visit by the Ships Commanding Officer upon deployment to Fremantle in 1987.DateBetween 1st January 1987 and 31st December 1987ProvenanceHMAS Onslow was an Oberon Class Submarine, one of six operated by the Royal Australian Navy. It was named after the town of Onslow in Western Australia.
The ship has a long link with Fremantle, having visited on many occasions.
The ship served during the peace time operations of the Royal Australian Navy. After decommissioning in 1999 the ship was gifted to the National Australian Maritime Museum in SydneyRelevance to the CityHMAS Onslow served in the Royal Australian Navy in the defence of Australian waters and has been based around Fremantle for some of her service, including being based just south of Fremantle at Garden Island.
The ship was decommissioned in 1999. The submarine was then gifted to the National Maritime Museum in Sydney - Gifted to the Mayor & City of Fremantle by the Commanding Officer of HMAS Onslow on visit to Fremantle during a 1987 deployment to Fremantle
