The Portuguese community approached the City of Fremantle regarding the possibility of a Sister City relationship with Funchal, Portugal. Approved by Council in 1994, the agreement is expected to be signed by both the Mayor of Fremantle and the Mayor of Funchal in 1995. In general, the main reason for initiating a relationship is to promote and encourage: international friendship, peace and goodwill, economic, cultural, educational and recreational exchanges, tourism, and an awareness and appreciation of traditions, customs and cultures.
