Notes
Officers are quartered amid ships occupying all Saloons (half of the boat for 50, other half for 1600 men) Food pretty good when we first came on board but not good now, and not too much of it.
Complaints to officers does not seem to have any effect.
We have to sleep between decks which is very stuffy & you must keep a blanket over you on account of the rats as they have steeplechases etc every night.
Sierra Leone or Freetown is about the worst place I have been in. It is full of fevers & we were forbidden to drink water or anything else. Oranges are very plentiful. It is very warm & it is winter here.
The Ulysses, Ascanius two New Zealanders & another transport left at 4 pm & two French cruisers & a British Auxiliary Cruiser. The Kent & Highflyer are still in port. Afric & another transport arrived. We have to coal our boat. I am among 70 of our unit. Collier is expected at any moment. We have to work stripped to the waist.
Went ashore yesterday & another lot went today. Several of the fellows who went with us, went out to it with the heat: one of the fellows on the Boona died with the heat.
We are doing nothing but eat oranges & coconuts & bananas. Oranges are 4 a 1d, coconuts a 3d. We have some fun with the natives. We are not allowed fresh water to wash with, it is only allowed for drinking. We cannot even get salt water tonight.
Coaling from 6pm on 15th. We went on shifts. Hardest work I ever done. A lot of fellows about knocked up.
