Cadd, Cyril Edmund
3528 Private Cyril Edmund Cadd - 10th Light Horse Regiment
Cyril Edmund Cadd was born in Fremantle on the 15th March 1895 to Frank and Emily Cadd. He had five siblings, Frank (1891), Dorothy (1893), Robert (1904), Gweneth (1904) and Kathleen (1907).
His father was a shipping agent based in Cliff Street Fremantle, and he had his early life in Fremantle but then the family soon moved to Perth. After leaving school he went to the country side and prior to the Great War he was working as a Station Manager.
On the 12th April 1917 Cyril enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force. He was passed as fit for enlistment with the medical examiner recording his physical attributes as;
Height - 5 feet 11 inches;
Weight - 156lbs;
Chest Measurement - 33-36 inches;
Complexion - Dark;
Eyes - Brown;
hair - Brown.
Upon his successful enlistment Cyril was sent to Blackboy Hill Training Camp and was assigned to the Training Depot. Cyril requested to be assigned to the Light Horse and was then transferred to that training squadron. On the 5th June 1917 Cyril was pulled out and was assigned to the school for Non Commissioned Officers. He was there till the 28th July 1917 when he was transferred back to the training squadron.
On the 24th September 1917 Cyril was assigned to the 31st Reinforcements to the 10th Light Horse Training Regiment. He trained with this group in WA until the 9th November 1917. Cyril and his group then entrained for Fremantle Harbour where they boarded the transport ship Commonwealth. This ship then took Cyril to Egypt.
On the 10th December 1917 Cyril arrived at Egypt and was then disembarked and sent to the Reinforcements Camp at Moascar. In January 1918 he was then sent to Gas School and was promoted to Acting Corporal.
On the 11th February 1918 Cyril joined the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Training Regiment. He then reverted to the rank of Trooper. Cyril remained at the training regiment till the end of April 1918.
Cyril was taken on strength of the 10th Light Horse Regiment on the 3rd May 1918 when they were in action at Es Salt. He served with the 10th Light Horse Regiment through to the 25th July 1918 when he was sent to a school of instruction for a month. He returned to the 10th Light Horse Regiment on the 26th August 1918.
Cyril spent a month back with the Regiment but in September was sent back to Hospital ill and on recovering returned to the 3rd Light Horse Brigade Training Regiment. He was then sent to a rest camp for more recovery time where he was still situated when the Armistice was declared.
On the 30th November 1918 Cyril rejoined the 10th Light Horse Regiment and remained with them till the 14th March 1919 when he came down with measles. He spent a few weeks in hospital but rejoined the Regiment on the 7th April 1919.
Cyril left Egypt aboard the transport ship Oxfordshire on the 10th July 1919, disembarking in Fremantle on the 4th August 1919.
After his return home Cyril returned to the country and in the early 1920's was married to Ida Elizabeth Lawrence, and they would have the children John 1924, Barbara 1925 and Robert in 1927.
The family were living in Toodyay through the 1920's where Cyril was a farmer. Then in 1931 the family moved to South Perth and Cyril was now working as a clerk, though he was soon promoted to Transport Manager. In the late 1930's the family moved to Osborne Park.
Cyril enlisted again in World War Two, signing up on the 24th March 1941, He was given the service number W32180 and served with the 9th Auxiliary Horse Transport Company. For much of 1941 he was serving around Claremont Camp and Northam Army Camp. In March 1942 he was attached for service with the Chinese Labour Company and was promoted to Sergeant.
In November 1941 he was transferred to Queensland and in 1943 was promoted to Staff Sergeant. In December 1943 he was returned to WA and was discharged from the Army as his civilian job was now classed as an essential service.
By 1949 Cyril and Ida were living at Main Street Scarborough.
Cyril died on the 2nd March 1977 while in Cronulla NSW aged 81. He had been cremated in NSW and his ashes returned to WA where they were placed in the family grave at Karrakatta cemetery.
