Staff Nurse Elvira Constance England - Australian Army Nursing Service
Elvira Constance England was born in Port Melbourne Victoria in 1892 . She was one of four siblings and the family moved to the Western Australian Goldfields when she was till young and she completed her education there.
After leaving school she took up nursing studies and then became a nurse at Kalgoorlie Hospital before becoming a Nurse at No.8 Australian General Hospital in South Terrace Fremantle.
She then enlisted into the Australian Army Nursing Service. She then embarked from Fremantle on the 18th June 1917 aboard the transport ship Mooltan.
On the 23rd July 1917 she arrived in Egypt and was taken on strength of the 14th Australian General Hospital.
After six months work in Egypt she then returned to Australia on the 15th February 1918 aboard the troopship Ulysses on nursing duty.
On the 5th June 1918 she then re-embarked on troopship Orontes which sailed to England. After arriving at Liverpool was attached for duty with 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Southall.
Elvira then worked in England for the next few months and on 14th September 1918 returned to Australia on transport duty on the ship Arawa.
She was then discharged from the Australian Army Nursing Service on the 8th December 1918.
Elvira continued nursing after the war and worked at the Anzac Hostel in the Esplanade Cottesloe before heading to Lemnos Hospital in Subiaco/Shenton Park. She worked there through the 1940's
Elvira died in Crawley on the 26th April 1981 aged 89. She was cremated at Karrakatta Cemetery.
