The place contributes to a substantially intact late nineteenth and early twentieth century streetscape close to the centre of Fremantle. HistoryEllen Street was named for Ellen Mangles of Woodbridge, Surrey, England, wife of Sir James Stirling, the Governor. In 1896 parts 2 and 3 of lot 394 were vacant and owned by WS and G Pearse. In 1897 two cottages with five rooms and a workshop were erected on part 2 of the lot of J M Hill, a contractor. In 1901 the property passed to Sarah Leake. Sarah and Frederick Leake were cordial manufacturers operating from number 11 Ellen St. In 1901 number 11 was number 16 Ellen St. The property was owned by Adams Electric Pty Ltd in 1962/63. Physical DescriptionSingle storey painted stone and brick attached pair of houses have a corrugated iron clad hipped roof which has two rendered chimneys with corbelling and a firewall extending above the cladding.
