Heritage TitleP22530 – EIGHT NORFOLK ISLAND PINE TREES, SOUTH STREETAddressEight Norfolk Island Pine Trees, South StreetGeo tag[1] Heritage Place No22530Statement Of SignificanceHistoric significance as an established avenue of mature Norfolk Pine Trees. Aesthetic significance for their contribution to the streetscape of South Street.HistoryThese trees were presumably planted to frame a vista down South Street towards the sea. They are evidence of Fremantle Council¹s efforts to beautify Fremantle and to provide a cultural landscape and form a landmark group on an important access route to the City of Fremantle. (M. Bosworth, Landscape Study, pp. 32, 39, 41) On the 27 February 2019 the City of Fremantle’s Council adopted the Register of Significant Trees and Vegetated Areas and determined that this place be removed from the Heritage List. The Council resolved to list the stand of eight Norfolk Island Pine trees on South Street in the Municipal Inventory on 18/10/1999. The background to this resolution appears to have been to protect the pine trees from possible removal given that the existing South Street road reservation allows for the future widening by 10 metres on both sides, between Hines Road and the Fremantle Eastern Bypass.
