She had sailed from Fremantle heading for Shanghai with a cargo of sandalwood and one passenger when she was caught in a gale and sank on 30 June 1878. No lives were lost in the wreck. The vessel, built by Robert Thompson in Sunderland UK in 1869, was a 48.7 metre timber and iron barque owned by Messrs Wilson & Oliver and under the command of Captain Thomas Scott. Artefacts including a rudder gudgeon, ship’s timbers and the ship’s bell, marked ‘Lady Elizabeth, 1869, London’, have been salvaged from the wreck site.
