Reference numberE000313DescriptionOn Monday 27 August 1984 Gerry MacGill and other Fremantle City councillors voicing their opposition to the construction of H.M.S. Challenger Harbour encroaching on the remains of the historic Long Jetty. Note Councillor Jean Hobson (holding sign "Stop P.W.D [Public Works Department] vandals!") and Councillor Amelie Whittington (wearing hat). Original P.W.D. plans showed the harbour's breakwater clear of the Long Jetty remains stretching from Bathers' Beach. However as construction commenced on 18 August 1984, councillors were informed of new plans showing the harbour encroaching on the jetty seabed by 250 square metres. On 28 August the P.W.D. agreed to change the breakwater position so that it would be isolated from the submerged ruins. The decision was just in time for the breakwater's position on the afternoon of the 28th was about 120 metres long, narrowly missing the jetty site. About 10-15 metres were completed each day. H.M.S.
