Reference numberE000323Description41-47 High Street. The Union Stores were built for Fremantle merchant John Bateman in 1895. Architect Herbert N. Davis. The firm occupied the building from 1897 to 1971 and provided the community with a variety of goods- groceries, wine and spirits, crockery and cutlery, builders' hardware, tools, home furnishings, bicycles and sporting goods. In the early 1970's the City of Fremantle, the Main Roads Department and the Metropolitan Regional Planning Authority acquired the building. On 26 March 1985 the City of Fremantle became the sole owner. During 1986 the building was restored and converted into retail and office space. This work was financed by a Commonwealth America's Cup grant, and led to the reinstatement of the verandahs. Many verandahs were removed from Fremantle buildings in the 1950's because they were believed to be a traffic hazard. The City of Fremantle received a commendation for its efforts in the Architectural Design Awards for 1988.Date1986PhotographerSumner, Brent Photograph FormatNegativeDigital ItemYes
