Phillip trained as a potter at the Perth Technical College and the Western Australian Institute of Technology (now Curtin University) during the mid 1970's and gained a B.A. in Design (Ceramics). He established his studio at the Bannister Street Craftworks in 1979 (he was one of the founding members) and was later elected to serve as the first Chairman of the Tenant's Association. Phillip's distinctive range of handcrafted pottery (Douglas Pottery) was produced exclusively for sale at the Bannister Street Craftworks and was designed to be both dishwasher and microwave oven proof.
