Named afterNamed after John Stephen Hampton, Governor of W.A. 1862-1868. Born 1810, died in England on 1/12/1869. Arrived per 'Strathallen' 22.02.1862. Married Mary Essex who died in England in 1868. One child, George Essex d. 1876 . John Stephen served as a surgeon in the Royal Navy 1829-1846, was then appointed Comptroller-General of the Convict Establishment in Tasmania until 1867. His term in Western Australia roused as much hostility as that in Tasmania because of his harsh measures and the appointment of his son to the post of Acting Comptroller of Convicts. Public works however, were boosted under his administration. Mostly by convict labour and with an outstanding architect in Mr R. R. Jewell and engineer Mr J Manning he built jetties at Albany, Bunbury, Bussselton and Geraldton; Government House, the Fremantle Bridge (1866), a new causeway and the Perth Town Hall and Barracks. He gave special attention to the colonisation of the Nor' West. Returned to England 14.11.1868 aboard 'Emily Smith'.See alsoStevens StreetDescriptionChanged to Stevens Street 1962.
