Many hotels were built in the 1890s and 1900s as a result of the discovery of gold and the consequent population increase and expansion of commercial activity in the port. The place has social significance representing the development of community life in Fremantle and as a venue for social and recreational activities.ArchaeologyConditionHistoryIn 1896 the lot was occupied by timber mills and offices owned by J J Higham. In 1899 the Hotel Australia opened, owned by James Duff and occupied by the hotel keeper Elizabeth Griffin. This is now known as the Flag and Whistle Hotel. Currently (2004) the place is a backpackers.
