The place has aesthetic value for its contribution to the streetscape and the surrounding area. It is representative of the typical workers' houses in the Fremantle area. The place is an late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture.ConditionCondition assessed as good (assessed from streetscape survey only).HistoryAttfield Street was developed from the late 1890s and is named for Dr George Attfield, who was the Imperial Surgeon from 1854 to 1879. Dr Attfield’s duties included attending convicts in Fremantle Convict Establishment and Superintendent of Fremantle Lunatic Asylum.
DUPLEX, 126 Attfield Street (and its pair at 128 Attfield Street) were built between 1902 and 1908. A Metropolitan Sewerage plan dated 1908 shows an mirror pair of attached brick cottages, sharing a length front and rear verandahs. Apart from a dividing fence and toilets at the back of each yard, there were no other improvements on the lot.
In 1912, Annie Moore was listed as the owner of the cottages. At this time, John Green lived in Duplex, 126 Attfield Street. By 1932, ownership had changed to Nora Wellstead. Both duplexes continued to be rental properties until at least the 1960s.
The duplexes changed hands several times in the 1970s and 1980s and were in joint ownership until circa 1990.
In August 2025 the place was changed from a LHS Level 3 to Level 2, retained on the Heritage List and Identified as a Contributory Place in the South Fremantle Heritage Area.Physical DescriptionDUPLEX, 126-128 Attfield Street, is a single storey, limestone, brick and iron duplex pair with a symmetrical facade designed as a late example of the Victorian Georgian style of architecture. The walls are limestone with brick quoins. The roof is hipped and clad with corrugated iron with a dividing wall visible through the roof. The verandah has a separate bullnose corrugated iron roof and is supported by turned and chamfered timber posts. The front facade has a front door with double hung sash window to one side. There are two corbelled chimneys evident.
