His family lived in various parts of Fremantle until settling in North Fremantle. Difficulties supporting family during the depression. Piemaking and delivery; newspaper boy at nine; Burford's Soap factory at fourteen. Attended North Fremantle State School and Fremantle Boys. Also worked for Mt Lyell Superphosphate Co., Keasey Bros., WA Farmers Wool Store, Shop Assistants Union, Arbitration Court, Union organiser for 9 years. Involved with Druid's Friendly Society, Sec. of North Fremantle Labor Party. Many changes in North Fremantle due to industrial expansion.
