Educated at East Victoria Park Primary School, then Perth Boys' School (3 years) -- 14 years of age when war declared -- Joined navy aged 18 in 1943 -- Trained in Victoria then sent to New Guinea -- Worked as a radio operator -- Returned to W.A. on compassionate leave in July 1944 due to death of father -- Developed tropical ulcers on ankles so could not return to New Guinea -- Posted to secret radio station at top of wheat silo in North Fremantle, which operated from June 1944 to December 1945-- 15 people on duty, operated 24 hrs a day -- Worked 6 hours on, and 6 hours off -- Description of the station -- WRANS - signalled Rottnest Island for identification of ships coming into the Harbour -- Signalled by Aldis lamp or flags -- Problems of wheat dust -- August 1945 - sent to Darwin -- Americans -- Canteen for service people at top of old carbarn, High St. -- Gun emplacements -- Importance of Fremantle harbour -- Scare -- The ship that did not answer its signal -- H.M.A.S.
