AuthorBoyes, Percy, 1937-; Harvey, EricaDescriptionPercy Boyes was born in New Zealand in 1937. After gaining a Masters Degree in Psychology and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Psychology he came to Western Australia with his wife, Philippa, in 1968. Subsequently he earned a Masters Degree in Criminology from Sheffield University. Working for Mental Health Services at Heathcote Hospital and the Forensic Division, Mr Boyes became the first psychologist employed to visit Fremantle Prison in 1968, finishing the work in 1978. The development of the psychological service is discussed as are Mr Boyes perceptions of the prison and its population. Interaction between prisoners, prison officers and fellow psychologists is described. The role of women psychologists is commented on, as is the contribution of Colin Campbell, Director of Prisons. Mr Boyes wrote notes on the Psychology and Research Section from 1968, which began as a part of the Forensic Division of the Mental Health Services and was transferred to the Prisons Department in 1970. These are attached to the transcript, pp. 67-68.
