His father was a brass founder and engineer and Alan and his two brothers went to work in the family business. The effects of the War on the business, ships and other engineering firms. Alan talks about working in the foundry, apprentices, safety and environmental issues and general conditions, organisation of work, pricing, clients , regulation etc. He went to sea in 1948 and met his wife, marrying in 1953.
